The Bookdepository link provided above is an affiliate link. I received this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
I won’t provide a synopsis for this novel because it’s the second in the series and doing so would spoil you. All of my reviews are spoiler-free, even if you haven’t read the first book!
I can’t tell you how excited I was to receive this book for review! Stolen Songbird, the first book in the series, was the first book I read in 2015. What a way to start off the new year, right? I really loved the first book -you can find my review here– so I couldn’t wait to pick up the second book. At the same time, I was a bit hesitant because sequels can be quite disappointing! This one however, was far from disappointing to me!
As I said, this review is spoiler-free, so I won’t be talking about what actually happens. But I can talk about the pacing, action, etc. I’m always surprised by the books in this series, because they’re a bit longer than the usual YA books. But it never feels too long to me! I’m reading it and suddenly there will be a huge plot twist, which makes me think the book will end soon -on a cliffhanger. But then I notice that I’m not even halfway through! Which always makes me wonder what Danielle L. Jensen still has in store for me.
I found this book to be extremely captivating. The main character, Cécile, gets stuck in all of these insane situations -talk about a rock and a hard place… – and she always tries to make it turn out right. But does it ever? This series is quite action-packed! There’s always a new discovery, a new development, some more political intrigue and magic! There was much more magic in this book than the previous, and I loved it.
The parts I love most about these books are the fact that they include both magic and political intrigue and scheming. The society of the trolls is so deceiving -even though they can’t outright lie, that doesn’t mean they can’t deceive you. I never know who is on the good side or what the others are plotting. The plots and schemes in this book are really intricate.
The most prominent characters in this book are Cécile, Tristan, Chris and Sabine. I feel like there are so many other characters I want to talk about, but that would totally spoil you so I can’t even talk about them. Just know that there are many other characters that are complex and intriguing! I won’t tell you much about the main characters either, because who they have become largely corresponds to what they have been through. I do think that they are all strong characters, in their own way. Cécile is doing everything she can to help those she loves, the same goes for Tristan. Chris is trying to help his friends and the world at the same time. Sabine wants to be the best friend she can be, even if she makes wrong decisions based on what she thinks is right.
What I find most important is that the characters are quite complex. I thought I knew for sure how I felt about certain characters in the first book: some I hated, some I adored. The second book totally changed my mind on some of them though. I don’t know who is trying to do good anymore. I can’t honestly tell the difference between what would be good or evil sometimes. It has turned in this giant grey area and I applaud the author for being able to write a story that incites such conflicting feelings.
I would highly recommend this book to everyone! If you haven’t read the first one, please go do so now! Hidden Huntress won’t be released until June 2nd, so you still have time to catch up. It’s action-packed, full of magic and has great characters. My only regret is that I’ll have to wait such a long time for the third book. I mean, that ending!
