My Favorite Quotes | Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Artsy Reader Girl. Each week I will make a list of 10 books, authors or other bookish things surrounding a certain topic. Today, we’re talking about our favorite quotes. Let’s get started!

“If you pull it, you accept that billions should live as slaves. Imagine all those unborn. If it is not me, someone else will rise. Ten years from now. Fifty. A thousand. We will break the chains, no matter the cost. You cannot stop us. We are the tide.

~ Golden Son (Red Rising #2) by Pierce Brown

I rise into darkness, away from the garden they watered with the blood of my friends.

Morning Star (Red Rising #3) by Pierce Brown

It is important, when killing a nun, to ensure that you bring an army of sufficient size.

Red Sister (Book of the Ancestor #1) by Mark Lawrence

[talking about mental health awareness]
I can say, with some confidence, that it’s gone too far the other way. Because now mental health disorders have gone “mainstream”. And for all the good it’s brought people like me who have been given therapy and stuff, there’s a lot of bad it’s brought too. Because now people use the phrase OCD to describe minor personality quirks. “Oooh, I like my pens in a line, I’m so OCD.”
NO YOU’RE FUCKING NOT.
“Oh my god, I was so nervous about that presentation, I literally had a panic attack.”
NO YOU FUCKING DIDN’T.
“I’m so hormonal today. I  just feel totally bipolar.”
SHUP UP, YOU IGNORANT BUMFACE.

Am I Normal Yet? by Holly Bourne

I should have known better than to call upon the gods.

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

Had she really thought I would not know him? I could recognize him by touch alone, by smell, I would know him blind, by the way his breaths came and his feet struck the earth. I would know him in death, at the end of the world.

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

“It’s not natural for women to fight.”
“It’s not natural for someone to be as stupid as he is tall, and yet there you stand.”

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

He was as much a bully in death as he was in life, a giant who left behind not an empty space so much as a black hole, a huge crushing void that swallowed up all of our comforts, sooner or later.

~ If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio

“Mmm….she’s doomed! You’re doomed!! They’re all doomed! Notice I didn’t specify what kind of doom, so no matter what happens, I predicted it. How very WISE of me.”

Eragon by Christopher Paolini

“Someday, Locke Lamora,” he said, “someday, you’re going to fuck up so magnificently, so ambitiously, so overwhelmingly that the sky will light up and the moons will spin and the gods themselves will shit comets with glee. And I just hope I’m still around to see it.”
“Oh please,” said Locke. “It’ll never happen.”

The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch

Bonus Quote Day!

So I just did the 3 days, 3 quotes tag but I wanted to share 4 quotes with you. Actually, I want to share 100s of quotes with you, but I narrowed it down to 4. So today I decided to write a Bonus Quote Day post -so it’s kind of 4 days, 4 quotes but I won’t be tagging anyone specific today.

republic of thieves government quote

I wanted to make a post sharing this quote for several reasons. First, I love Scott Lynch and his Gentleman Bastard series. So I couldn’t make a quote sequence without including at least one. Second, this quote is both funny and scary. It’s funny because it’s Scott Lynch, and all of his books are just funny. It’s also scary because it’s so true.

Top Ten Tuesday: Quotes From the Past Year

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week I will make a list of 10 books, authors or other bookish things surrounding a certain topic. Today, it’s all about them quotes. YES! This is one of my favorite topics. Why? Aside from the obvious reasons, I already know that I’m going to get a tattoo of one of my favorite literary quotes one day.

ttt quotes 17 11

“When one dream burns to ash, you don’t crumble beneath it. You get on your hands and knees, and you sift through those ashes until you find the very last ember, the very last spark. Then you breathe. You breathe. You fucking breathe. And you make a new fire.”

From: The Summer of Chasing Mermaids, by Sarah Ockler

“Spend your free time the way you like, not the way you think you’re supposed to.”

From: Quiet by Susan Cain

“I’m not going to die,” she said. “Not till I’ve seen it.”
“Seen what?”
Her smile widened. “Everything.”

“I could recognize him by touch alone, by smell; I would know him blind, by the way his breaths came and his feet struck the earth. I would know him in death, at the end of the world.”

“Chiron had said once that nations were the most foolish of mortal inventions. “No man is worth more than another, wherever he is from.”

“Plenty of humans were monstrous, and plenty of monsters knew how to play at being human.”

ttt quotes 17 11 p2
“Have you ever asked yourself, do monsters make war, or does war make monsters?”

“Stand aside, and try not to catch fire if I shed sparks of genius.”

“What is government but theft by consent?”

“Push yourself. Don’t Settle. Just live well. Just LIVE.”

So those are my choices for this week! Do you like them? Have you read any of the books? I’d love to hear about it. And if you’ve made a TTT list, feel free to leave a link!

My Favorite Quotes | Part 1: Fantasy

I’ve been blogging for almost a year now and I’ve never really made a post about my favorite quotes. So I figured it was high time to change that! I really couldn’t choose a reasonable amount of quotes as my favorites, so I just decided to split this post up. This is part 1! You may notice a trend: most of these are from fantasy novels… Let’s look at the quotes!.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy, by J.R.R. Tolkien

“All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.”

I’m not completely sure why I love this quote/poem. I guess because it reveals so much, and not just about Strider. I like that it’s both a prediction about the future and an honest representation of what he is now. I think it has become one of the most famous poems from The Lord of the Rings, and it was also used in the movies. Aragorn is one of my favorite characters, which may explain why the next poem is about him as well.

“Where now are the Dúnedain, Elessar, Elessar?
Why do thy kinsfolk wander afar?
Near is the hour when the Lost should come forth,
And the Grey Company ride from the North.
But dark is the path appointed for thee:
The Dead watch the road that leads to the Sea.”

This is the poem used as a message from Galadriel to Aragorn. Not only do I love Aragorn, but I adore Galadriel as well. The Lady of Lothlorién. Aragorn has so many names throughout this series, but Elessar may be my favorite.

“May it be a light to you in dark places, when all other lights go out.”

Another one from Galadriel guys! She says this to Frodo when she gives him her present. I feel like we should all get a blessing and gift like this. We all need a light to help us through our darkest moments.

Gentleman Bastard series, by Scott Lynch

“So that makes us robbers of robbers,” said Bug, “who pretend to be robbers working for a robber of other robbers.”

First of all, this sums the Gentleman Bastards up perfectly. Secondly, who doesn’t love this sentence? You go, Bug. I just realized how weird his name sounds together with encouragement. I am not encouraging any bugs out there, okay?

“We’re a different sort of thief here, Lamora. Deception and misdirection are our tools. We don’t believe in hard work when a false face and a good line of bullshit can do so much more.”

Good to know I’m not the only lazy person here. I would quote every line from every single one of his books if I could. But that’s not realistic. So I just collected the funniest and most witty ones.

“You’re one third bad intentions, one third pure avarice, and one eighth sawdust. What’s left, I’ll credit, must be brains.”

Accurate description of Locke Lamora.

“Stand aside, and try not to catch fire if I shed sparks of genius.”

Less accurate description of Locke Lamora. Although, I have to admit that he is kind of a genius.

“What is government but theft by consent?”

Accurate description of not only their world, but ours as well.

The Inheritance Cycle, by Christopher Paolini

“Perhaps not one religion contains all of the truth of the world. Perhaps every religion contains fragments of the truth, and it is our responsibility to identify those fragments and piece them together.”

I really love this quote from Eragon -the character, not the novel. Maybe he’s right, you know? How do we know?

A Song of Ice and Fire, by George R.R. Martin

“Why is it that when one man builds a wall, the next man immediately needs to know what’s on the other side?”

Very, very true.

“When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives.”

This only confirms that I need to find a pack.

So this was Part 1 of my favorite quotes! I started by picking my favorite quotes from fantasy novels -and these aren’t the only ones. I still have quotes from Anne Bishop, J.K. Rowling and so on, which all fall in the fantasy genre. But I didn’t want to make this post a mile long. So here it is! Part 2 will be up soon! What are your favorite quotes? Do any of these make the cut?
