My favorite bookish couples | #TopTenTuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly post hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Today, in honor of Valentine’s day, we’re talking about our favorite bookish couples! As the prompt states ‘couples in books’ I will only talk about the canon ships. In the past few years, it’s happened more often that I prefer the non-canon part of the love triangle to the eventually canon one. Anyone else suffer through the same? Anyway, here are some of my favorite canon ships.

Disclaimer: I guess you could see some of these as spoilers for these books. If you’d rather not know anything about these relationships, make sure to skip over the text after you spot the cover!

Ruth and Evan – A Girl Like Her (Ravenswood #1) by Talia Hibbert
Watch me scream about this book some more… I read it in January and absolutely loved it. It’s one of the best new adult/adult romance novels I’ve read in a long time. Ruth and Evan are the dream. I love how they appreciate each other’s interests, how much respect there is in the relationship, how they care for one another in their own way… I just loved it.

Sebastian and Emir – Running With Lions by Julian Winters
If you’ve been around my blog for a while, you might know how much I love Running With Lions already. It’s an adorable YA contemporary set at a summer football camp. Sports camp + LGBTQIA+ relationships + body positivity talk = this book. Please read this! If you need more (coherent) convincing, you can find my review on the book here.

Sister Apple and Sister Kettle – Book of the Ancestor series by Mark Lawrence
I know that Sister Apple and Sister Kettle aren’t the main characters of these books, but I honestly wish we would get some additional novels focused on them. I would buy them immediately! One of the things I like most about them is that they’re in a healthy, established relationship already. They’ve been together for years, and it’s clear how much they adore one another. Especially in Grey Sister, the second book of the trilogy.

Jesper and Wylan – Crooked Kingdom (Six of Crows #2) by Leigh Bardugo
I find it hard to choose a favorite couple from this duology. If I’m being completely honest with myself, I know that Jesper and Wylan just have a special place in my heart. If I could protect them from all the horrible things in this world, I absolutely would. I’m fairly certain I don’t need to explain this choice further, because they’ll be on everyone’s list.

Meg and Simon – Etched in Bone (The Others #5) by Anne Bishop
Talk about a slow-burn romance… It takes them 5 books to get to this place – which I don’t consider a spoiler because we all knew where they would end up. On the one hand, I wanted it to happen earlier so we’d get more scenes of them actually being together, but on the other hand I feel like this was the only way to go for these characters. Considering Meg’s traumatic past and Simon’s lack of knowledge about humans, they needed to take this relationship slowly in order for everyone to be comfortable and happy with it.

Hugh and Sorcha – Daughter of the Forest (Sevenwaters #1) by Juliet Marillier
I’ve read this book multiple times now, and fell in love with it more every single time. What’s interesting about their story is that Sorcha can’t speak or utter a single sound for years if she wants to save her brothers. The entirety of their friendship and relationship is built on sign language, body language, and so on.

Patroclus and Achilles – The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
I know you’re all rolling your eyes at me right now, because I’ve mentioned this book so often now. I don’t care. There are still so many of you who haven’t read The Song of Achilles, and I won’t stop until that’s fixed.

Astrid and Charlie – Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan
At the start of the series, Astrid and Charlie don’t really talk. They were together for years, until Astrid’s family intervened because they didn’t think Charlie was good enough for her (read: rich and classy enough). Watching their friendship develop again, and knowing how much Charlie cares for her made me root for these two so hard. It also helps that I absolutely despise Michael – Astrid’s husband.

Percy and Monty – The Gentleman’s Guide of Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee
This is another couple I feel will be on everyone’s lists, and doesn’t need an explanation. I just love them so much, and want to read more about their lives after the end of this novel.

Chris and Josie – The Melody of You and Me (Lillac Town #1) by M. Hollis
I always feel a tad hesitant recommending this because it’s so short – it’s 144 pages. However, it’s such an adorable new adult f/f romance! I want more people to read it, so I’ll do my very best promoting it. It has a pansexual main character and a Filipina lesbian love interest. It’s also sex positive, which I’m so grateful for.

There you have it, 10 of my favorite canon couples! Have you read any of these books? How do you feel about these relationships? Let me know what your favorite bookish couples are, so I can add even more novels to my to-read list…

NOTPs | ships I’m not on board with

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly post hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Today’s topic is a freebie! I decided to talk about some ships I’m not on board with, aka NOTPs. I feel like this post needs a disclaimer: if you love any of these ships, this is NOT an attack on you or your reading tastes. Relax. They’re just ships I don’t particularly love.

My NOTPs

Lia/Rafe – The Kiss of Deception (Remnant Chronicles #1) by Mary E. Pearson
Fight me on this one. I really am not a fan of Rafe. I kept this name as the ship because I didn’t want to spoil anyone who hasn’t read the book on whether he’s the assassin or the prince. My point is, I’m still not behind this ship even though I’ve read all three books. In fact, with every book I disliked him more. How he didn’t respect Lia’s wishes, made decisions without consulting her, and more. I actually have another NOTP from this series, but I felt like sharing it would be a spoiler for the third book. If you have read the third book, message me on Twitter because even though it’s been years since I’ve finished it, I still don’t agree with it!

Will/Tessa – Clockwork Angel (Infernal Devices #1) by Cassandra Clare
Unpopular opinion number 2! I have never liked Will. From the first book on, he was just a moody, annoying piece of crap. He not only treated Tessa badly, but the people who raised him and cared for him too. Yes, there are some “reasons” to his behavior, but it’s really no excuse to me. I’ll also never forgive them for a certain scene in the third book.

Remus Lupin/Nymphadora Tonks – Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling
Don’t get me wrong, it’s not because I hate them together or think they’re not good for one another. It’s just that I think Remus and Sirius were in love, and thus it feels weird to me that he married Sirius’ cousin. Just saying. #wolfstar

Katniss/Gale – The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Honestly, it’s been such a long time since I’ve read this series that I can’t quite remember all my reasons as to why I don’t ship them. I just don’t. There you go.

Astrid/Michael – Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan
ASTRID DESERVES BETTER!!!!!!! Fuck Michael. Honestly, he is the worst kind of man, intimidated by a woman who is richer than he is, and has more connections than he does.

Ross/Rachel – F.R.I.E.N.D.S
I wish this never happened. Rachel deserved much better than a guy who constantly looked down on her for her chosen careers, who didn’t respect her wishes or opinions, who was so disgustingly possessive out of insecurity, who is homophobic and reinforces toxic masculinity, and who kept her from achieving her dreams. Rot in hell, Ross.

Buffy/Riley – Buffy the Vampire Slayer
No chemistry, no honesty, just nothing. This relationship had nothing going for it, other than the fact that Riley is a pretty good-looking guy. Boring.

Veronica/Duncan – Veronica Mars
Noping out of here SO FAST! I am still a big supporter of Veronica/Logan, even though Logan is pretty awful at the start of the story. Okay, not just pretty awful. He’s an asshole. But Duncan is just so boring. And he also feels like the kind of guy who constantly looks down on her, and keeps her down too. Logan lifts her up and makes her reach for more. Duncan doesn’t. I don’t know why anyone would pine for this dude.

Clark/Lana – Smallville
Once again, this relationship just left me bored. Clark lusted after Lana for ages in high school and had the biggest crush on her. Then she finally noticed him. But I never felt like the two really had much in common, or any chemistry for that matter. Once again, they didn’t raise each other up. I don’t know, this ship just left me bored, and I couldn’t wait for them to break up.

Sookie/Bill – True Blood
Team Eric, everyone. Or team Alcide! I just don’t like how Bill kept manipulating Sookie into doing what he wanted, and how he kept her ignorant so she would stay dependent on him. Actually, Alcide is the only one who didn’t keep Sookie from doing what she wanted, or learning more about a certain subject. He helped her, drove her around, and protected her by her side. He didn’t forbid her from doing things (at least not from what I remember – I never finished the show).

My friends’ NOTPs

I thought it would be fun to add NOTPs from my (bookish) friends too! I love these girls, so I knew I had to ask for their opinions on this topic. The explanations I’ve provided for these NOTPs are the ones they messaged me after I asked them!

Ross/Rachel – F.R.I.E.N.D.S
Inge (Of Wonderland) definitely agrees with me on this one. We both absolutely despise Ross… See the reasons mentioned above!

Damon/Elena + Klaus/Caroline – The Vampire Diaries
Alessandra‘s NOTP is Damon/Elena! To her, it feels like the two were randomly put together because a large part of the fanbase asked for it. Inge also added Klaus/Caroline to this list, because murdering one’s family does not seem like a great start to a relationship.

Alina/Mal – The Grisha verse by Leigh Bardugo
Inge also contributed this NOTP to the list! I personally can’t remember enough of Mal to make a comment, but she found him to be too clingy and possessive. In her words, ‘I hate Mal!’

Leyton (Lucas/Peyton) – One Tree Hill
Another contribution from Alessandra! Leyton was her NOTP, simply because she adores Brucas. I can sympathize. Brooke Davis for the win. (Also, Sophia Bush for the win…)

There you go, our NOTPs! I thought it was fun to include some of my friends NOTPs on top of mine. Do you agree with us? Or have we discussed some of your favorite ships? What are your NOTPs?
